thousand miles away

about

these words were written in 1985 on an airplane returning to the US after touring japan. metalworkers was a group assembled by g.e. stinson in the 90s to play his underground pop songs.

lyrics

we're up in the air
the sun is on it's side
i have the taste of a dream in my mouth
from a language i don't understand
and somewhere in the north of japan
children burn their uniforms in secret
they whisper to me
while someone is cracking in two
they have the sound of a man in their ears
from a place that they'll never see
and here on the edge of america
i am just as glass is stretched through fire
and you can smell the smoke
you can feel the heat
a thousand miles away
a thousand miles away
small hands
touching the water
dark eyes
bending the light
were turning away
the dreaming is set aside
i have words that are stuck in my throat
words that i'll never speak
and somewhere at the back of the sky
shadows fall like ashes through her fingers
and you can smell the smoke
you can feel the heat
a thousand miles away
a thousand miles away
